I'm having a problem keeping my battery from dying. The charging light on the instrument panel isn't coming on so I'm assuming that its charging and the fluid level in the battery is fine. The battery is only a little over a year old. Any suggestions?

Before you throw away your generator there are some points to consider.
On alot old fords of this age the tach was driven off the end of the generator. You can do a simple voltage test to see if the generator is working. With the engine running at speed voltage at the battery terminals should be 13-15 volts. A simple volt meter from Radio Shack can check this.

The magic question here is: Does the warning light come on with the key on, engine not running? If it does, and goes out as soon as you start, it SHOULD be charging.

If the light doesn't come on, you could have any number of different problems. Whatever you do, don't pull your hair out on that old generator. Throw it out and install an alternator conversion kit! Believe me when I say, it will save you MUCH frustration down the road.

Bern, Yes, the light comes on when the key is turned on and it comes on when I turn the key off and the engine speed slows. Where can I get an alt. conversion kit? Dealer?

If the light comes on with the key on AND goes out when the engine fires up, it SHOULD be charging. Check across your battery with a voltmeter to confirm. After the tractor has been running for awhile, you should be in the 13.5-14.5 volt range.

Yes, most dealers should be able to get you a kit. TISCO makes a kit that I have experience with and has been good for me.
