Except, for me it's a horse apiece whether it's gas or diesel. Think about this: the 801s had 4 cylinders and a average sized 3 main crank. The 3 cylinder has a 4 main crank and a massive 80 lb crankshaft, much heavier rods and big, wide bearing surfaces. Think what that does for longevity.
The 4000 is about 1K lbs heavier too making it is more robust in every way.
The disadvantage to the 3 cyl is it is significantly larger - taller, longer - than the 801.
I would go with the 4000 if it is an 8 speed.
I would not want another Select O Speed.
