Hi All,
My 73 4000 3 cylinder has the horizontal exhaust manifold and I would like to change it back to the original vertical one. The reason for the change if I get out in the weeds or brush this could be disastrous for me.
Is there any quirks that I need to be watching for? maybe some manifold that is said to be for the 4000 but only will fit certain years.

Maybe one of you guys would have a good one and would be willing to part with or maybe trade.

I have a "73 4000 also, and when I purchased it last year I had to replace the entire exhaust because it was rusted out. I bought a manifold, gasket, pipe and muffler on line for less than $100.00 total, including shipping. I bought the clamps and rain cap at my local Tractor Supply Store, and everything fit together just fine. Make sure that the manifold says that it is for a 3 cylinder 4000 and you should be fine.

One tip - Tighten the manifold to the head first, then do a loose fit of the pipe that connects the muffler to the manifold and set the hood down over it before you tighten the clamp that holds the pipe to the manifold to make sure that the pipe is centered on the hole in the hood so that it doesn"t rub. I had to go back and loosen the clamp and bang on the pipe to get it to line up with the center of the hole in the hood after I tightened the clamp without checking first.

I just purchased the manifold and muffler from YTC this morning. Should be here in a few days. Not bad pricing and the shipping was great.

A vertical exhaust manifold for a 3 cylinder 2000, 3000, or 4000 is what you need. Or one from any Ag or Industrial derivitives of those models. Anything later (eg. 4600 manifold) will have a different outlet. A&I and Tisco have repops for cheap. There is also a transition pipe to fit between the manifold and muffler. Not sure if these are in the aftermarket.
