My tractor seems to run fine until spring arrives and then something always seems to go wrong.

I'm here just to ask if my process of diagnoses is correct.

The tractor is a 1967 3cyl 4000.

Two weeks ago, I started the tractor, well actually I had to jump start it because the battery didn't have enough umph. I ran it at idle for almost 3 hrs. Parked the tractor.

Yesterday I go to start it and NOTHING. No solenoid click or anything. Get the truck and try to jump start it again. Still nothing.

NOTE: Safety switch is buy passed.
Here is my plan of attack.

solenoid has three terminals. The middle one runs the relay to short the positive lead to the starter. quick test would be to jumper from the middle terminal to the positive battery terminal. If tractor turns over then the key switch is bad.

Second I can jumper the positive battery directly to the starter to see if it turn over.

Third I'll remove the solenoid and test on the bench.

If all these fail, I'm lost.

Oh yea I'll clean all the connections before starting any of these process.

One question - If I leave the "safety" terminals connected will it hurt anything? I know the switch is momentary in the tractor, so once it's started and you place in gear the switch is off.

Sorry for the long post - but I believe in giving as much info so people dont have to ask questions.

Spring is here and I hate have the tractor just sitting there.

Thanks for all the replies. I dont think I'll get to it this weekend.. back to cold and rainy. I guess it's time to finish that ark I started. Now where did those Unicorns go?

I'll check the batttery first.. Seems like I have to put a new one in every three years or so.. I'm using a heavy duty car battery.. would I be better off getting a "real" tractor batter. I think they have almost double to cells.

This is going be SOOOO much better once I have my shed done. working outside in the cold and mud isn't fun.

Alternator or generator?

If a genny.. 3hrs at idle may not have actually charged your battery much.. if any.

Charge the battery up.. if it won't hold the charge.. bat is bad. A bad bat can keep a jump start from working due to pulling down the booster battery too much by the time you factor in the drop at the clamps and cables..

I's start with a volt meter on the control (small) terminal of the solenoid. If you have voltage there when you turn the key to crank, then you've just ruled out the ignition switch and wiring. If it doesn't start then.... take a big channel lock plires or Vise Grip and grap the two big lugs on the solenoid and short them out (MAKE SURE THE TRACTOR IS IN NEUTRAL!). IF it starts you have a bad solenoid. If it doesn't, go back and check all the cables and connections to the battery and down to the starter. If it still won't start after cleaning and tightening all connections on a charged battery, I'd bet on the starter....

In the first test, if the solenoid pulls in, the key switch is not necessarily the only bad component. The wire between the key switch and the solenoid and from the battery to the key switch could be bad, too.
If the solenoid does not pull in, the solenoid is bad. So this test will determine if the solenoid is bad or if the battery to key to solenoid circuit is bad. If the solenoid is not bad, it will also tell you that the starter is good and the circuit to the starter from the battery through the high current contacts in the solenoid are good.
The second test is only required IF the solenoid is bad and you need to also find out if the starter is also good.

I don"t think your third test will provide any further info.

If there was no click, My bet is the Battery is pouched. I'd put a battery charger to it. Charge it over night, and take it for a load test. If you boosted it the other day, My guess is that it is the battery. Start there first. If not the Battery, get a test light, and check all your connections whith it. Start at the connections for the key. There should be power to it. Turn the key to start position. If the test light lights up, its not the key. Check all sides of the solinoid with test light. Do this by turning the key to start position. You may need help for this. If ther is saftey switches, test them with the test light the same way. Don't disconect any thing until you are sure what the problem is. You can bump a cable against the tractor, and cause an arc, causing damage to somthing else.
