Hi Folks, I still have a problem with understanding how the hydraulics work on my 73 4000.

I built a back blade for the tractor that uses the external hydraulics to angle the blade. The long lever in the picture is the lever that will direct the oil to the cylinder turning the blade either right or left.

When I pull the long lever towards the front of the tractor it will strike the short lever. When that occures the three point will drop to the ground. Is there something that is not adjusted right? I don't think the short lever should be in the position but that is where the pictures show it. This system is not addressed in the operators manual that I have.

Here are a couple of pictures of the blade and the hydraulic valve handles.

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

lookin at the operator's manual, the short lever needs to be in the "up" position for position control. and lower for draft.

also looks like the original ford valve attatchmen has slightly different offset so that the levers do not clash. your options are either cut the short one shorter or bend/fabricate the long one to clear.

Push the position-draft control lever (the short lever)down .Leave it in position control. When your longer lever contacts the smaller one it is shifting to a point between position and draft. This disengages the contol valve linkage allowing the lift arms to fall. The auxillary valve should work with small lever down. You only need the draft control pulling a breaking plow.

Is that valve a ford product of an after market item. I can not find any drawing in the parts CD or any mention of it in the operaters manual.

Steve here is a link to a album where I have posted some pictures. Feel free to look around at the other albums also.

Hope this works.Link

The valve is the same as the one I have on my 5600 which I believe to be original on the tractor, except I have dual remote valves. I have never used the 3 pt in draft mode, so the little lever is always fully forward and not in the way of the control lever. Another more expensive option is to buy the FV 4902 plate and plumb the inlet to the outlet and install under the valve to give you additional spacing to get the control lever above the draft control lever.

I would say aftermarket, but I do not know the options Ford offered for that tractor. You can put a remote valve on most old Ford tractors, ones I am familiar with have the lever pointing froward, but those are for older fords (all depends on how the lift body is designed I guess).

I had the same problem on my 3000. I solved the problem by cutting the top end off the short lever with a cut off blade on a small angle grinder.

Charlie,

I am not an expert on your particular model however the small lever that is vertical in your photo appears to be the draft control, and yes when you push it down the 3 point is in draft mode (has no position). On my tractor this lever is closer to horizontal. The valve on top that the long lever is attached to is an external valve (for remote connections). See if you can reposition the smaller valve lever or push it down and move the long lever in front of it then raise it back up and see if the remote valve will still operate correctly.
