OK, I cut off that last message.

So, I started the tractor for some plowing practice when the failure occured. The motor was running, and the starter was still engaged.

After a panicky couple of seconds, I disconnected the battery. BTW I had the ingnition turned off and the key in my hand while this was going on.

Yesterday was the day to try to repair it. I thought i had a failed ignition switch. Installed a new one-even though that wasn't the problem. With all wires disconnected from switch, i conneted the battery to hot wire the starter. I noticed I still had a bit of voltage draw on the battery when connecting it.

When i crossed the wires to start the motor, it fired rite up. and.....the starter was still engaged!

So, at that point, and to this minute, i don't know what's up with my tractor. I thought that the starter sileniod fried because of the small amount of draw in the system when i reconnected the battery-so, you guessed it-I replaced it too!

Hooked everything back up and just after dark was ready to start the motor again.

Back to square one!!

Motor started, starter still engaged.

There were now 'signs' of anything unusual before this first failure occured, so I'm really stumped!

Can someone please lend me some advise on this problem? I would really appreciate it!

I don't think I'll apply any of this advice today however...it's about 15 below zero!!!!

Thanks for the insight.
I plan to disconnect the lead to the starter. Install a test light betw the batt. and cable, and see which wire to the solenoid has the short, by disconnecting one wire at a time only. I suspect the Ignition initiation lead as it"s insulation is pretty crusty and cracked. (original)
Once that is completed, I plan to remove test light, replace batt. cable, replace starter cable-with starter initiation wire disconnected.
Next install jumper wire onto the initiation lug of solenoid.
With tractor in park/blocked, I"ll jum wire to the + lug on solenoid. This should start the tractor, with starter disengaging IFF the initiation wire was the culprit.

Am I tracking with you sotxbill and souNdguy correctly?

Thanks again!!

Furthering sotxbill's line of thought.

Hookt he solenoid back up but without the start wire on it.. use a jumper to start the tractor.. make sure clutch is blocked / in neutral.. and jumper bat to the small lug.( key on ). if tractor starts and the starter disengages.. then you may have a short inthe start wire fromt he key switch, over to power somewhere.. or the key is wired wrong.

Find that draw on the battery as well... I like to disconnect 1-wire at a time till I find them... you can put a low wattage test lamp inline with the battery hot terminal and the cable, and then start pulling wires.. when the lamp goes out.. you found the offending wire..

look at the wires at the seloniod..

there should be a wire with a spade lug closer to the engine all by itself. make sure the big wires are not touching this small lug to the inside. remove the small wire off of the spade lug. this is the starter intialization wire... then connect up or touch the battery cable.. if it still cranks,, you have a short inside the seloniod, or the wires on the lugs are touching the wrong places... if the starter doesnt spin with the small inside wire pulled off but does when you put it back, you need to find how the voltage is getting to the small wire.. This wire goes to through neutral safty switch and then up to the ignition switch to the starter lug of the switch.. only when the trans is in neutral does it let the voltage pass through the safty switch.. and then only when the starter switch is in the "start" position... you might have the wire plugged in the wrong place on the back of the ignition switch...
