I have read in several posts that aftermarket proofmeters are not reliable, especially if made overseas. I am starting to restore my '54 NAA, and would like to leave the original proofmeter in place, since it still works. However, over the years the face, while still readable, has developed a layer of rust.
First, can the proofmeter be disassembled? And if so, can the faceplace be replaced, or if not, can the rust be removed without damaging the face?

Worst case, I can clean up the trim ring, tape off the glass and repaint it before reinstalling it. I would rather do this and have the original with a rusty faceplate that replace the proofmeter and not know how long it will last. Thanks for your help.

I BOUGHT A NEW PROOFMETER FROM JEWLLCO AND I HAVE BEEN MORE THAN SATISFIED. (VERY ORIGINAL LOOKING) ALL ARE TESTED BEFORE SHIPMENT.

THERE IS HOWEVER A PROBLEM WITH THE CABLES. I BELIEVE THE REPLACEMENT (CHINEESE CABLES) ARE NOT BUILT TO SPEC AND SLIP IN THE HOUSING ON THE TRACTOR. THE ORIG CABLES ARE STILL AVAILABLE FROM FORD.

I BRAISED A NODULE ON THE CABLE AND GROUND IT DOWN. WAS LUCKY I DIDN'T DESTROY THE CABLE. WORKS GREAT JEWELLCO@SCRTC.COM (TRINA)

GOOD LUCK STEVE

That may be what I have to do. I was going to ask if anyone knew where you could buy a replacement faceplate or a decal to go over the existing faceplate, but I never thought of getting a damagfed unit and using the plate from it. Thanks for that idea.

Another question. If changing the faceplate, does anyone know what you do to remove the needle?

Ask 'Dan' over on the N forum.. I believe he is our resident 'proofmeter' surgeon..

If you can't find a decal, and the new ones are really bad junk. then there should be lots of broke ones laying around right? Just find a broke new proofmeter from a NAA/640/840.. etc.. and ask for the faceplate... Many of us have mailed broken proofmeters to those wishing to do surgery on them and needing parts..

Yes, the proofmeter can be disassembled. There is a metal ring crimped around the body that holds the glass lens in place. Using a small screwdriver you can pry the ring up on the back side. There used to be a website where a fellow gave detailed instructions and photos of a pm rebuild. Maybe he still visits this site and he will post in.
