Anyone have a good number for the cup and cone that go in the steering box of my 640....the band-aid I put on didn't hold.

Got the cup out, Hyatt 10780Z (maybe), but no cone number, bearings history.

Got the Ford numbers, but they can't match them up.

Like to get them ASAP locally, still a 22 mile drive minimum.

Actually I'm a retired machinist, an neighbor (who isn't) has a good lathe. Plan was to reclaim the radius on the top end before assembly paying attention to axial play.

You've talked me into packing the top bearing and area with marine grade grease.

The upper bearing sits above the oil level and does not get lubed. Not one of Henry's better ideas. Actually, the Saginaw sectors suffer the same mallady, and from the similiarity, I would guess that the Ford uit is a Saginaw design. Also I suppose you have noticed that the inner race is a machined surface on the worm shaft. If that race is severly pitted, the new bearing isn't going to function well, and unless you are friends with a machinist, the only fix is a new $haft. Some of the guys on here recommend replacing the oil fill plug with a Zerk fitting and pumping the housing full of grease to a level above the top thrust bearing. Seems like a good application for some waterproof grease. Know anybody in the Navy?

Well the search is over. Beginning to realize because of the barrel shapped rollers and the lack of an inner race this bearing set is a sort of a proprietary Ford bearing. Only source is going to be the stealer ship or online.

Previous owners were kind, they left parts for “seed”. Found 21 old rollers in the bottom of the housing. Only other treasure was part of an old cage. Bottom cup and cone were in excellent shape, looks like not replacing the sector seal allowed the fluid to seep out and let the top bearing to run dry. I’ve replaced the seal, now just going to have to wait for the new bearing set to come in.

Found nothing else wrong, so when I get it back together and it still steers hard (especially in reverse and when going slow) I’m going to assume this is just a hard steering tractor as other people have mentioned in previous posts.

I'm talking about the thrust bearings. Gave them all the Ford numbers and they couldn't cross them. One even looked in his ag book and said he couldn't find them.

New Holland dealer 52 miles away was closed today, probably won't open till Monday, and then probably won't have them in stock....plus I'm not ready to give up my right arm.

Would buy them online today, but I'm leaving the tractor up here and returning home next Wed. That wouldn't give me enough time to make repairs, that's why I was trying to buy locally.

Really wanted to get it fixed before I left so my son could use it on his place when he comes up the first week of Dec.

Did you try to get your guy to cross the CNH numbers to some other brand, like NSK or Timken, or did you give him the number off the old bearing? Also, are you talking about the thrust bearings, or the upper bearing assembly? There are 2 thrust bearings. Same numbers for both upper and lower. The cup is 8N3552. The cone is 8N3571. If the top bearing assembly is what you are looking at, the number is B7NN3517A. HTH
