If you are talking about the pin in the hydraulic system, you drive it out in the direction that is the least amount of hammering. I replaced mine a couple of years ago and as I recall the pin is about 1.5" long (+ or - a little). One end of the pin is driven into a hole in the lift mechanism and the remainder of the pin just sticks out. Mine was stuck real good and required quite a bit of hammering to get it out. I was concerned that I was on the verge of breaking something.
