Just bought a refurbished Ford 2000. It's in excellent condition, except the generator just burned out. My model is a 21201 and the serial# is 42981. Does anyone know what year it is? Also, when buying parts, it seems like I may need to know the type of engine, HorsePower etc. What information should I need for this tractor to get a new generator and where's the best place to get parts, new or used.?

Thanks!

John

Thanks everyone for your help. It was indeed the generator because it was 'a-smokin!'

I replaced it and now need to make sure it's working. I polarized it as was told by the store I bought it from.

I connected the ground wire to the alternator. I then connected a wire to the field connection of the generator and briefly touched the 'negative' terminal of the battery. There was a small spark. (The tractor seems to have the "+" connected to the tractor's chassis so that's why I touched the negative terminal with the wire.)

So how I can I check to make sure the generator is working? With car alternators, I simply measure the voltage across the battery to make sure it's 12V with the engine not running and 13+ V when it is. But I tried the same with the tractor and it seems I get 6 Volts when not running and then "0" volts when running. That seems awfully odd. I tried both DV and AC setting on my voltmeter.

If you dig around on the site Glen listed you will also see a page that breaks down the serial # by month. Yours (42981) was built in Feb of 1964.

To get a generator you will need to know it is a 1964 2000 w/4 cylinder engine. You will also need to know if it is gas or diesel because the gas is 6v and the diesel is 12v. This is all based on the fact that no one has done any modifications to it in the past.

On the 2000's.. you pretty much need to distinguish between the older 63-64 4cyl models which is essentially an updated 601 series, and the newer 3 cyl models which were much different.

Are you sure the genny died? Any chance it could merely be the regulator?

Might be way cheaper to rebuild than replace.. or simply repalce reg.

Do a motor test on it to see if the genny itself is good.

Disconnect genny from reg, ground genny case, jump power to armature and field. if genny spins, it should charge.

I hear you're the guy to answer my question regarding polarizing my generator. The place I bought a new one from told me to connect the ground wire to the generator then temporarily touch a wire between the battery terminal and the field lug on the generator. I did this and there was a small spark. Yet, based on a DC voltmeter, the voltage across the battery didn't increase when I ran the tractor. Since I have a positive ground, should I polarize it a different way? I read in another post somwhere to try jumpering between the B and D terminals on the regulator. Yet on this regulator I don't see a "D". There are three connections, they are (From left to right) ARM, FLD, BAT. Any help would be appreciated.

Tractor Info: 1964 Ford 2000, 4 cylinder, gas engine, 6 VDC Battery, Positive Ground.

According to the serial # listing in the left column of this site your tractor is a 1964. Try the below listed site courtesy of John in LA who put it together. It will give you what your need.
