I had previously posted about converting to 12V. Thanks for all the responses. I decided to take one more shot at figuring out my problem before I committed to the conversion.

I spent some time cleaning all the wire connections and replacing the points/plugs. Time very well spent – I finally learned and really understand the electrical system. The result was a nice spark.

Rebuilt the carb (MS TSX-765) and went to fire it up only to discover that my newly replaced fuel shutoff valve would not allow fuel out of the tank. Valve was defective – I couldn’t even blow air through the valve. Replaced it again and finally got fuel flowing - She started right up.

It had been about 7 months since she ran. I ran it for about 2 hours over the weekend. Then I tried to show my Father-in-law that I got it running and nothing. Spark plugs badly fouled with carbon. Put the old plugs back in and she started right back up.

Two issues:

1. I can’t get the engine to idle below about 900 rpms.

2. Carbon fouling - The old plugs I put back in were Autolite 437s so I hope that helps.

I think both issues are related to properly adjusting the carb.

What’s the best procedure to adjust the carb to get the proper idle speed so I can verify the timing?

Thanks,

Joe

If the fouling is black fluffy soot, then you have a mixture that"s too rich. Warm the tractor up and then lean the idle jet so that you can set the idle speed to about 400-500 rpm. Then lean the power jet so that you can move the throttle to max rpm and the engine will accelerate without coughing or hesitation.

If the fouling is oily and wet then the rings have lost oil control.

Are the Autolite 437's the best plug to run on a 4 cyl?

I had to replace my plugs every month after I bought my 8N. I finally replace the carbon core wires with copper core wires and still have the same set of plugs 3 yrs later. Best thing I've done to it. HTH

Black sooty fouling is a sign you are running very rich.

I'd perhaps lean out the idle and main jets and see what you get.

Also check idle stop/set crew ( external linkage adjustment )
