Mine (871) did the same thing. The shifter slipped after 4th speed and would not shift after that. I found a guy (real knowledgable about SOS) in Western Mass who replaced the valve body (it holds the shift cable)changed the transmission oil and adjusted it for me. E mail me for his name and phone if interested.

My SOS is a great working machine.

Low or dirty oil? you likely needed to rock the tractor just a bit as you tried to disconnect the traction coupler.

What kind of trouble is your Select-O-Speed giving? Perhaps we could help if we knew its symptoms. Sounds like your PTO cable just needs a proper adjustment.

well i was brush hogging the other day, i put it in 5th gear and it acted like it slipped. so i jiggled the shifter and it went in. i drove it on up the hill to my dads and stopped and talked to him a few minutes and when i got on it it wouldn't go frontward or backward. so i left it there a few days and went back down and tried it again if i reved the rpms up real high it would go in gear it worked good in both reverses and 1-4 but starting with 5th it might go in but if it did it would take off then stop then take off again. i went ahead and finished mowing the holler in 4th and it quit again so i had my brother come and see if he could pull it home for me. i couldn't get the lever to move to free the rearend when he tried to pull it. then he pulled it back just a little bit and it kicked in so i stopped him and drove it on home in 4th gear thats where i'm at now.

thanks for the links les. steve I'm gonna have a fellow come over and see if he can adjust it, I hope thats what it is cause the pto lever is out of adjustment to. I have to loosen the cable on the trnsmission pull it up and lock vise grips on it to get it to kick in. Fordfarmer i don't know much but someone told me a 4 speed with high and low was an 8 speed, is there a differance?

That is the 8 speed. They're about bulletproof.... I'd take one of them over 10 S-O-S trannies, but mabey that's just me....
If you like the jerk-a-matic, see if you can get it adjusted or fixed.... because it won't exactly be a simple swap to put an 8 speed in your tractor short of having an entire back half of a good 8 speed tractor. Good luck.

If you decide to go the transplant route, get an 8-speed. Great selection of ratios, bullet-proof, and can have live pto, which a 4-speed wouldn't.

eric; We had several Fords on the farm but none with the SOS tranny. If you like the SOS speeds mabe you could look into what it takes for repairs. Neighbor had 2 with SOS. They got to not working right. All they needed was adjusting and clean oil and filter. Hope this helps some.
