Been reading this forum for a couple months in anticipation of receiving my new tractor. It finally came home a couple days ago. It's '59 871 with the SOS and a Superior FEL. This is my first tractor ever, so I have been trying to learn as much as I can here.

The engine has been newly rebuilt and has virtually zero hours on it. The front mounted hydraulic pump is brand new and the tractor hydraulics (is that the correct term) have been checked out and a new relief valve installed. It has power steering, which I understand is a plus with the FEL.

It has been modified over the years, some home made light brackets bolted through the fenders with one halogen light pointed forward and one backward, but neither work. The tractor has already been converted to 12v and it seems to work well.

Of course, after much reading here I became a little concerned about the SOS, but after my initial ride and checkout, every gear works perfectly. From what I've read here, I know that fluid changes and proper adjustments should make it last a long time.

I've recently been reading of the pros/cons on the inching pedal and whether to use between shifts, and there sure is a diverse opinion on that topic. I have yet to get the correct manual for the SOS, the 3-volume set I bought did not include the SOS transmissions in the operator's manual so I'll have to find one for it. Is there a specific number for the correct SOS owners manual and does it matter if it is for an 871 or a later model?

Here's a photo of me playing around with it the other day...

I'll try and post another photo or two in the gallery tonight!

Yes it does matter if it's an 871 manual. If you still have the original transmission it is different than the later ones. A question though: How do you know you have an 871? The hood is not correct for an 871, but it counld have been swapped with something not correct for the 871.

Hi Larry - the model number 871 is stamped on the flat above and behind the starter and the serial number crosses to 1959. There are a few things that aren't "original" like the 5 speed proofmeter which doesn't work (I think the cable is broken). I suspect a lot of parts swapping occured in years gone by.

Since it matters which SOS manual I get, how do I know which one to order? I've tried searching for the correct manual, and thought I had the right one with my 3-manual purchase, but so far I haven't been able to specifically identify the operator's manual for an SOS equipped tractor. My parts and shop manual both include the SOS, but not the operator's manual

I've been spending a lot of time researching the archives, maybe I haven't submitted the right search query to get the answer?

Thanks for your help!

At the ford show last year during the SOS rebuild seminar, they stated plainly that using the inching valve like a clutch is a good thing. Less shock on the system. Less wear on the torque limiting clutch (weak link)
