I HAVE AN MID 60"S 4000 FORD TRACTOR. IT IS A 4 CYLINDER GAS. MY FATHER IN LAW HAD A SIMILAR MODEL WITH A 4 CYLINDER DIESEL. HE TELL ME THE ENGINE BLOCKS ARE THE SAME. THE ENGINE IN MINE NEEDS REBUILDING VERY BADLY. WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO CHANGE MINE TO DIESEL? IS IT POSSIBLE AND WHAT WOULD I NEED?

some say the gas block & the diesel blocks are the same NOT so.You would Have to use the diesel head & will NOT bolt up on the gas block. I have changed A gas 641 to a diesel.
I found a complet diesel runnung good took the complet 172 ,fuel tank throttle linkage ,battery Box 12 volt system came on a 601 diesel.
I like the way it turned out.

I think you would find it to be much cheaper to do a full rebuild on your existing gas engine....Unless you can get the good running diesel engine and related needed parts for free or almost free from another tractor. And then you could add a "D" to the designation for your tractor. You would need the complete diesel engine with injector pump, the fuel tank and the diesel "throttle" linkage, as well as some parts I may have forgotten. It should bolt up to your existing transmission, front end and tin.

Can you convert a gas block into a diesel block? Maybe, there are a lot of similarities, but I would bet the process would be very expensive. Note that the gas and diesel blocks have different headbolt patterns, and you would need to use the diesel head and injector system for it to work as a diesel. I don't think the idea is practical.

But the good news: it isn't all that expensive to rebuild a gas engine, assuming it is just worn and not broken. A gas engine is lots less expensive to rebuild than a diesel. Good luck!

You will end up with a bare block, & throw most of the rest away - including the generator, need 12v to spin the diesel.

It would _not_ be cost effective.

As others say, the 3cyl newer engine was designed to be a diesel block, much better deal. Ford did pretty good converting the gas block to a diesel engine, but they are never as strong.....

Like HB said, it can be done as some parts are interchangeable but it is neither practical nor cost effective. The 172 gas engine that you have is a good engine and much less expensive to overhaul than the 172 diesel. If it were mine, I would overhaul the gas engine and use it for the next 20 years or so.

If you must have a diesel, I would trade tractors and, again like HB said, look for a newer model. The 172 4 cylinder diesel is indeed a convereted gasoline engine and, though it has proven to be a a decent design, diesel engine technology has improved a gread deal since the mid 50s. The subsequent designs are more robust and durable.

Hi TLM72VETTE,

If you are real handy with money, very few things are impossible.

However, what you are proposing is not very practical. Rebuild and enjoy your gas tractor or buy yourself a diesel tractor. I recommend a 4000 three (3) cylinder diesel.
