'71 Ford 2000: dry sleeves

Hello everybody:

I'm having the engine of my Ford 2000 rebuilt at a machine shop. I'm glad the guys there suggested dry-sleeving the engine right away (we know about cavitation pinhole problems when boring oversize etc.)
Now, this is what interests me: The sleeves which they are putting in come without a ridge or land that would hold them in place. The machine shop has left a ridge at the cylinder bottoms standing rather than boring right through. So the sleeves will be held in place (apart from the press fit)by this ridge at the bottom and the head at the top. This is okay by me although it means boring the sleeves out at a subsequent rebuild (which I probably won't need given the small amount of hours I put on per year). Just out of interest, though, I'd like to know what is usually done with this kind of sleeve to keep them from slipping. Do people just rely on the press fit?

I'd appreciate any input on this subject.

Many thanks

Guenther Sigott

Hello Guenther, I am getting ready to have my Ford 2000 engine rebuild. Will you be kind enough to let me know how much it cost you to have your done and who did the work for you. Are you satisfied with the work? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks Norman

I bore the block to the exact specs given in the Ford Service Bulletin. This makes for a very tight press fit. I use a 20 ton hydraulic press to install and put a band of red Locktite at the top and bottom. Haven't dropped a sleeve yet.

Thanks Marv for the info. Haven't got any experience with dry sleeves. So far I've only dealt with wet ones.

Cheers
