The starter on my 861 diesel disengages too fast if it would hang on for another cylinder to fire she"d run. Put a new drive on it and the starter seems to turn over fast enough. Also last summer when I put a new clutch on in it the starter ring seemed to be fine. What I would like to do is find a modern starter with the solenoid on it. Does anybody make a new starter without that damned ratchet to go on those old fords. I am also open to suggestions to fix the old starter.

Dear 861D,

I think you may have the wrong starter drive. My starter will stay engaged until the motor is actually running. It has never ever kicked out until she started. You might have the starter drive from a gas tractor. To check your starter drive, take the starter off the tractor. Turn the drive until it screws out. Once it is out it will not go back in until the motor is running. If you can screw it out and back in then it is the wrong one or yours is defective. I hope this helps.

Gas/diesel drives are the same prior to 1965.

If you are wanting to replace the old style starter and drive, use one for a late 60's or 70's model big block ford engines ( FE series ) 330,352,360,390,427, and 428 cu in. It will bolt right on and requires no modifications.
