I"m the proud owner of my first tractor, a 67" 3000 diesel with an s.o.s. that works great so far. However, the p.t.o. is always running no matter what gear the tranny is in, even park and neutral. I can move the pull handle on the dash and the arm on the right side under the seat without feeling them touch anything or make any noise. I"ve tried to stop it at a low idle by holding a block of wood against the shaft but it still turns. I"m planning on mowing with the tractor but dont like the idea of loading it on a trailer with the mower turning. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or any ideas to dissengage it?

It is not normal! Take it to your Ford New Holand dealer and have him fix it. It is very dangerous if it is always running

Yes it is in reply to norbert kanzler, 09-15-2004 07:35:29
Yes, it is normal. Take it from someone who's worked on more of those things than he cares to remember. It's not right, but it's normal.

See my posts below re. the 6000 for more info.

One more for you Bern... in reply to Bern, 09-15-2004 16:04:04
Thanks Bern. While your at it, can you point me toward the fill level plug for the rear end? I resealed the left axle hub and drained about 2 gallons of oil in the proccess. I was told the oil level plug was on the front right side under the seat (square head plug). I pulled the plug out and was met with a gush of oil. Could it have been way too full or am I in the wrong place?

Yes, it is usually a square headed plug. It should also be 1/4" NPT pipe thread. Sometimes I have seen the factory install an allen head plug though. It"s not much higher than the level of the floorboard.

Sometimes we say "normal" when we mean "typical".

This is normal. With a load on the PTO and at normal operating temperature this will be less of a problem.
