Have a 2000 with the 3 cyl. diesel engine. It won't crank with the starter, but will crank easily when we pull it off. Could this be fuel pump problems, or electrical problems? I know the battery is low, but jumping will not help. Any comments will be appriciated. Moye

Thanks for the answers gentlemen. Ya'll have
never let me down yet. We will try a new battery,
and if that does not work, then we will go deeper,
like compression. Thanks again, Moye

After thinking about what you've said I think we have a misunderstanding of terms. You say the engine won't "crank" with the starter. Crank means rotate, just as when engines were started with manual cranks. I think you're saying is that the starter rotates(or cranks) the engine, but it won't start. If that's the case it could be, as Jack suggested, low compression. It could also be, as was asked in your original question, a fuel system problem. Worn fuel injectors could also be a factor. Since it starts when pulled, I'm guessing you have low compression, or as Jack said, slow cranking speed...Al English

A diesel needs to crank relatively fast, since it fires off of compression pressure. You say it won't crank off the starter even when jumped, so if it is cranking as fast as it can that way (150-200 RPM or so) then it may be that the engine has low compression pressure (mechanical problem), but will start by pulling because you can get the RPM's up enough that way to get it started. If the starter is spinning the engine fast enough, I would check compression pressures.

Hi Moye, From your post I gather that the engine will start if the tractor is pulled, but the starter motor will not crank the engine. If that's the case there's no reason to suspect the fuel system. Rather, the problem would be somewhere in the starting system. Give us more information and we'll try to help...Al English

Al, thanks for your reply. The tractor belongs to a friend. I am finding details out as I go. He told me that he could not crank with the starter, but would crank by pulling it off, and cranked very easily that way. I suspect he needs more battery, but was wondering if any of you had any other ideas. Had one of the old 601 4 cyl. diesals once that would not crank without starting fluid, a gasy(sic) rag, or pulling it off. That was almost 30 years ago, and can't remember how the boss finely fixed it. Thanks, Moye

Check the battery cables, for a Diesel they should be at least AWG #2 cables.

Adding to your comment: Yes checking cables and cleaning terminals should be done from time to time anyway. Good idea to also check the engine end of the ground cable and the starter motor cable terminals. Resistance in the battery and starter circuits will slow down the starter.

The battery was said to be low and jumping doesn't help. An internal battery short could cause the problem. I'd put a charger on the battery for a short time and then switch to a trickle charger for a day or so. Each cell should be tested with a hydrometer to see if all cells come up to acceptable levels. If the battery charges OK, a question might be why was it low, but that's another subject.

The problem could be the engine, as mentioned, and a compression test would detect many engine problems. The problem also could be the starter motor itself. Many manuals give a set of tests for starter motors. It would have been good to run the starter tests while the motor was off.
