I am in the process of purchasing a 4600 diesel with front end loader.the engine is locked, the owner said he used it one day and everthing worked fine, the next day it would not turn over and after replacing starter & battery he found the engine was seised. He thinks the piston sleeve may have moved,he says this is a problem on this model tractor.

any suggestions or coments on this problem,i can afford to take a chance on it since he gave me a good price.

thanks john

Just split the engine and have a peek inside.

You might try Alexander Tractor 1-800-231-6876. They also have a website. The sell complete ford tractor engines, short blocks heads and what ever needed for a Ford tractor. They ship nationwide. The engines are rebuilt in their shop and carry a warranty.

John,

I hope you find something simple like Rod mentioned. You might ask what the old starter was like when it was removed.

I've seen a starter gear break and a piece of it wedged between the flywheel and bellhousing 'locking up' the engine.

If he ran the tractor one day and the next day the engine seems to be seized, then the first thing that I would do is pull out all the injectors and make sure there is not any fluid on top of one of the pistons preventing the engine from turning. If there is fluid on one then determine what it is and where it came from. Good luck, hope this helps.

A sleeve moving? Not in that engine. It could have a sleeve if it has already been rebuilt. Some blocks were sleeved from the factory, and the block will be identified as such. Either way, the block is bored for a 2 thou interference fit, the sleeve chilled in liquid nitrogen, and then dropped in. When it warms up, it ain't movin. As for the block, whether it is a 4.4 bore as it should be, or a sleeved version at 4.2, BOTH can be sleeved or resleeved, with the 4.4 requiring a lipped, thin wall sleeve. That's from the book. The block can also be bored to a max of 40 over, if you had to clean a ring groove or rust.....from the one day it sat...not running. $3000, + labour would probably do a fairly thourogh reworking, including block work. If it were me, I would think about what the tractor would be worth running, and deduct the repairs. Another thought, being a LONG shot, is that he dropped a starter bolt down the hole when changing his starter, and it has bound up on something. Again, a long shot, but a thought. It's not hard to lose a bolt. Also, be sure it is stuck, and not just a loose connection or bad starter. "Replaced" is not always new or reman, mabey just "another starter". Ground terminals were known to work loose on the Lucas, rendering it totally useless. If it wiggles, tighten the jam nut behind the cable. Hope this helps a bit.

thanks rod for the info,at least iknow now that i can bore .040 over and install a repair sleeve if there is any cylinder wall danage.i plan to pull the block myself and have a machine shop do the boreing & fit the sleeve if necessary,so maybe i can save on the labor cost.

hes' pulling your leg.. this engine doesnt have a sleeve.. and its not a common problem..

unless someone has sleeved it.. and the 4600 block was already bored beyond sleeveing back to its orig large bore, it only could be sleeve back to the smaller bore.. if my rebuild info is correct... so a sleeve would mean thats its a 4.2 bore instead of the 4.4 bore and the engine would have been already rebuilt once...

the smaller bore could be sleeve and those engines were even occasionally sleeve at the factory but the engine serial numbers had an extra symbol to indicate a factory sleeve... but again only on the smaller bore engine... the 4.4 in bore was too thin for a sleeve and cannot be sleeved.

thanks bill for your info,if the bore cant be machined i dont have to many options, but i did find a semi-finished repair sleeve(value bilt tractor parts)that allows .040 overbore and i.d. can be finished to 4.4 standard bore.

thanks, john
