Sounds like a model 841 (in the 801 series) based on your clues.

1. you say it's a diesel. Diesel was introduced with the 801 series in 1958.

2. You say it has a hi/lo option. That sounds like a Sherman step-up or step-down aux trans. That aux trans can only be mated to a 4 speed transmission, not a five speed. So that eliminates the 851 and 861.

I'm guessing 841 because that's the model I see Shemans installed on most often. I suppose it could even be an 821 or 831, but I kind of doubt it. Does it have a pto and 3 point hitch?

Thanks, it does have a 3 pt hitch and a power take off. It is in really excellent shape, the sheet metal is superb, I am loosing oil through the 'breather' on the lefthand side of the top of the engine. Any suggestions (new rings). The oil is making a real mess. Oh, the alternator is also not working, but it may be the wiring. This is very much a 'working' tractor, but this winter I want to do it up right! Any help would be appreciated!

Oil is pumped up there to lube the rocker arms. If it just running out the breather/vent a possible cause would be the drain back returns are plugged/restricted. This is caused by years of condensation causing rust to form and flake off the sheet metal valve cover.
