'63 2000 distributor question ...

Having never pulled a distributor out of an engine before, I have what might be a very stupid question:

When I pulled the distributor, a small square shaft (about 3" long) came out attached to the bottom. It just presses into the bottom of the distributor, but none of my literature (FO-20 or the service manual)show this shaft.

I'm afraid to try to re-install the distributor for fear of this shaft will fall into the motor!

Any advice? Is this normal?

Thanks for any response.

It's the oil pump drive shaft.
