What is a Select-O-Speed Trany?
I've seen 2 old model 4000's with S-O-S Tranies and bad PTO or the same tractor twice by to different dealers in different towns.
Is it a weak design?
Thanks,
Jerry

Find someone near you with one and try it out.
Depends on what you are going to use it for, BushHoging and mowing --- Great machine.

I want it mostly because it has a loader to move snow, manure, and dirt around the farm. If I can get the PTO fixed I would also use it to bush hog my pasture and sell my TO30. If not I would keep the TO30 to mow and just use the 4000 with the loader and blade. Maybe a box scraper too.

No shift lever on transmisison cover. But rather a lever mounted below the steering wheel. Can shift on the fly. Known as a planetary gear drive. Starting, stopping, and selecting gear ratio is done without a standard clutch. 3 types of transmissions - all basically similar but PTO's are different. 1. without a PTO 2. w/ a 540 RPM engine driven PTO, 3. 540-1,000 RPM engine drive and a ground speed ratio PTO.

3 elements of a planetary gear is the sun gear, pinion carrier, and ring gear. When any element is rotated, the other two elements will also turns unless one is held be an external force. And it gets better. The Vintage Tractor Resource link can explain the SOS in detail with a diagram too.

Aren't you glad you asked?

LOL. That is a lot of infro! How can I tell which this is? IF it's the same one I had seen before it's the first modle 4Cyl. with the Buff paint.
Since it specfied bad PTO. I assume it had one.
The first one I saw when I called the dealer about it he said it would cost $3,000.00 to fix because the PTO was right in the middle of the S-O-S.
Does that narrow it down?
Jerry

I'll let you know :). A 59 871 Selecto is arriving next week. But here's the scoop:

Ford rushed the early ones out of the factory to the showrooms and problems developed. Bad reputation from the start, but engineers fixed the problems and it became a fine transmission.

According to Tony Jacobs, if it is a fine running and good SOS it is more than likely a good transmission. If an early one has a repair history, it could be a lemon. Ford fixed the early design issues and solved the problems. But once the reputation was started it seemed to stick with them...

Keep an open mind. You will hear the entire range of opinions but you will have to inquire about the specific tractor past use, past maintenance, and history of use on it. Chances are if it is a good running and operating SOS you have a good one. Just maintain it according to the manual.

My dad has had this same tractor for over 10 years without problems. I have recently inherited it. With proper maintenance, I believe it as any machine will last a very long and productive life.
