I am trying to cut about 3 acres of hay on hilly ground i have recently purchased a sicklebar 501 mower but the attachment for the toplink is missing can i just use a regular toplink and just disregard the spring link

Not quite sure what you're missing. Are you missing the entire top link? Or is it just the straps that go from the link to the spring? Or is it both? An early Ford (8n) top link is identical to what that mower came out with. I've got a 501 if you need patterns for the straps. These should be easily fabricable.

Not likely. The spring 'floats' the mower. without it, you will scrape, hard, into the ground. And no, you won't get it right to just adjust the 3-point manually. This will make your mowing experience - well - miserable.

Not very well if at all.....

That spring is the float for that system and rather critical to the operation. The cutter bar will not float and will slam down hard and not work well on rough ground. Sounds like a recipe for a broken frame. More information would be available over on the implement forum
