Jubilee Low Oil Pressure

Here is a strange one that may help some of you having low oil pressure problems. My brother bought a Golden Jubilee that was supposed to be overhauled. He had his doubts about how the job was done by the way it ran, but he wasn't too concerned because the price was right and my brother is a good mechanic. After teardown he found out that there were new sleeves and rings installed, but the crank needed grinding and the inserts were installed backwards. He ground the crank, installed the correct inserts,a new oil pump, and oil and filter change. He was still getting only 5 to 6 psi oil pressure. After many hours of trying everything, his neighbor who had worked at the local Ford Tractor dealership came over. After looking things over and hearing the story, he told him to change the new oil filter. He did and the oil pressure went up to 40 psi. It seems that he had a bad filter all along. Hope this helps someone. His neighbor said that he had seen this before, and it is the easiest thing to check.

I don't think the oil filter was the problem with the oil pressure because the oil pressure is tapped from the oil gallery behind the hydralic pump before it goes to the filter. The problem probably was a stuck pressure relief valve in the oil pump. I have seen this especially after an engine overhaul when some foreign particle was dislodged and went to the pump and stuck the relief valve in the pump. Sometimes it will correct itself and sometimes it must be freed up manually by taking the spring and plug out of the pump and freeing the plunger of the relief valve.

I don't know about this particular model, but most engines equipped with oil filters also have a filter relief valve, set to open and bypass the filter when it becomes so clogged it impairs adequate circulation of oil. If this engine was so equipped and the device was working properly, I would think it would allow a better pressure.

Yes sir, the Jubilee does have a bypass valve. On the Jubilee (with the original, early type oil filter) oil flows through the filter, into the hollow center bolt (which contains the bypass valve) and into the main oil gallery. If everything is working properly, the pressure at both ends of the tube is equal and the bypass valve within is closed. When the filter is clogged, pressure in the tube at the bottom of the valve is lower than the pressure at the top of the valve. When the pressure differential is approximately 7 psi the bypass valve opens. The open bypass valve allows unfiltered oil to flow into the main oil gallery under pump pressure.

There is not much to the bypass valve. Very low tech.

I am not saying that changing the oil filter wouldn't fix a low pressure situation. Under certain circumstances it might. With the later style, screw-on oil filters (the Jubilee can be retrofitted to accept the later style filters) the bypass valve is within the filter itself. If the early style oil filter with center bolt has been replaced with the later style screw on, replacing the oil filter would also replace the bypass valve. Replacing an oil filter with the early style center bolt does not affect the bypass valve, and a stuck valve/clogged filter may affect engine oil pressure.

'course, I could be wrong.

I have a 1967 Mack tandem dump truck which I recently had overhauled and the oil pressure wont
get up above 40 is this ok? Any response will be
greatly appreciated.
