1720 4wd compact Ford (New Holland) tractor oil

hi,
I have a 1720 Ford 4wd with a 3 cyl diesel motor. I just bought 15w-30 high grade (shell "impella") motor oil and i was wondering if its okay to use in it. The book recommends 10w-30 with the CD service label. The back of the oil can says that it has been apporoved for all diesel engines and is actually endorsed by John Deere and Caterpillar. So will this oil be okay or should i not put it in it?

The API service rating should be found on that oil jug. There will be an 'S' and another letter, which is the rating for spark ignition engines. The 'C' rating is for compression ignition engines (diesels). There should be a CD, CF, or CG-4 rating on that bottle somewhere. The higher the second letter, the more current the oil's specs. If not,buy oil that has one of those ratings. The 15W-30 viscosity rating is fine for your 1720, given the proper API service rating.
