1970 3000 Diesel-- When I bought the tractor the tach/proofmeter wasn't working. Too costly to have it repaired so I replaced it with a "new" style tach/proofmeter cluster. It too has "broken". Worked fine for awhile then spun all the way off the dial causing the tip of the indicator needle to break off. Cable is in good shape. Dealer won't replace. What causes this too happen? Does anyone know if there is an inexpensive way to replace the tach/proofmeter without replacing the whole cluster? Everything else works fine. Thanks for any help.

If the current cluster that you have is late model, you may be out of luck. That cluster is a special build unit made specifically for older tractors, and I'm not aware of service parts for those. Although it looks the same as current production, the tach spins the opposite direction. Having said all that, your case may well be an unusual one, as I have not seen many tach failures of the type you describe with the new tachs.

In mechanical driven tachs the problem you described is typically caused by the drive chain binding. The chain (spring type speedo cable) literally winds up and then suddenly breaks loose and it overdrives the needle as it rapidly unwinds. The drive cables/chains need to be lubricated with graphite power to minimize this problem. Do not use grease base lubes. The entire length of the cable needs to be coated generously with the graphite.

David,
I too have the same problem with my 5000 Ford. My needle is also broken off. I posted basically the same question about a year ago. About the only suggestion that I got (other than purchasing a new one), was to open the face of the instrument cluster and superglue the needle back on. No way that will work in my case since the spindle is broken, not just the arm of the needle. I will watch this post to see if any good suggestions come along.

My self we own a 2600 ford diesel, it to has sheared the Needle off, Does not have any thing to do with the cable winding up , they wind more than 1/2 turn they break, Most likley i think it has to do with moisture and some rust forming , Between magenent and speed cup, our 2600 only does it in cold weather , same time needel goes nuts it is producing a howing noise, Could also be a Bad speed cup bearing Dragging the needle past its limits, They work just like a Speedometer , only thing they forgot the needle stop . you could take a Drill and spin them 100= mph that needle will only go so far and thats it, the tachs apparently have a needle stop only whene they hit the case and break
