IF YOUR GENERATOR IS OK, WHY DONT YOU JUST READJUST YOUR REGULATOR TO CHARGE TO 12 V. YOU WILL HAVE THE SAME BETTER STARTING. THE ALT WILL GIVE YOU MAINTENANCE FREE BRUSHES, AND BETTER CHARGING AT LOW SPEED.

I have found a couple good sites about this conversion. I will post them as soon as I find them. But the basics are get a chevy alt with built in regulator. The starter system should work as is when you change to neg ground. and you all ready have a 12v batt. At one site the person updated with new gages. I believe they said the ameter would work with reversing the wires. Everything Ive read on this conversion is to the positive. Faster starting and you can add the electronic ign to get rid of the points. I wanted to do this but one thing at a time was breaking(selenoid, generator)so I was fixing each piece and didnt want the down time to do this conversion. Heres one site that has a 12v conv wiring diagram Link

the easiest conversion is with a delco alt. and you need either a voltage reducer or a 12v coil with a built in resister, reverse the wires on the amp.meter. hook up the bat+. wire from the regulator. to the bat + term. of the alt. you will also need the two wire alt connector from a parts house. connect the red wire from the two wire plugin to the bat+ term.also.. the white wire hooks to the field wire of the regulatorand should have an idiot light between the ign. circuit and the alt...install the new coil or the voltage drop between the ign.switch and old coil. change your tractor lights to 12v

Search the archives of this site. I don't know the exact page, but there is very thorough, step-by-step directions there.

Also, check out the link below. I think directions are there as well.

Good Luck,
