12 Volt Conversion Package for 801 Powermaster?

I'm getting a Ford 801 Powermaster soon. It has a 6 volt system on it now. I know that a 12 volt
conversion package is available for the 8N, 9N and other models. However, I've not seen one listed
for the 801 model. Does anyone know if one is available for the 801 (or whether one of the ones for
the 8N, NAA or others would work)?

If not, I'd like to know the parts that I need to cobble together. I.e., alternator, coil, etc., and
where I could get my hands on a wiring diagram. Thanks in advance. I posted this message over on the
8N board before I figured out this was the better forum for this question.

I converted my '64 2000 to 12V without a kit and using a FORD alternator. The whole thing, including battery and headlights, only ran about $120. Email me if you want the wiring diagrams (free, of course) and what parts I used.

: I personnally would leave it 6 volt also until you have a problem, if you do have aproblem and wanted to leave the stock appearance just change the generator and regulator from a diesel model as they were 12 volt from the factory then run a ballast to the coil.

An alternative is to use the 6v system as is. When I got my 821, it had a 12v battery and 6v electricals! Needless to say, a decision was called for. I replaced the battery cables and bought a new voltage regulator and it starts easily and charges fine. The starter does spin faster with 12v than 6, but I have had no problems getting started on 6v. My recommendation would be to switch to 12v only if the generator is fried. Then the cost of conversion might be similar to cost of replacement. Good luck!

I would like to give this a try on my 850, where would i find such a voltage reg., any model numbers.
thanks.

: thanks.

My message was misleading. The 12v battery is gone and I am back to 6v. Replacing the regulator was necessary because the 12v battery fried it. I got a replacement from Walt's Tractor Parts online.

There are kits available, the least expensive way is to make your own brackets and get a one wire alternator, the alternators go for around $35.00 around here. The nice thing about the 1 wire is that you run the wire from the alternator to the amp gauge and from the other post on the gauge to the soleniod switch.(hot post where the battery cable fastens) I have been using this type alternator for 20 years or more and have had real good luck with them. The alternator is a Delco with built in regulator. The reason you only have to use 1 wire is that a self exciting regulator is used in the alternator, the only problem that I have encountered is some of the regulators do not excite until the engine is turning about 1500 RPMs. TISCO has the brackets, they list for about $60.00 they are the same ones that fit the NAA.

That generator can be re-wound to 12V at any rebuilder for about $65. New Ford/NH voltage regulator, and a 12V battery (neg ground) and you're in business. Coil on that tractor is the same, 6V or 12V. Same wiring diagram.

That's an interesting solution. Thanks for the information.
