I am currently looking into buying a 971 Select-O-Speed. I would like to know if there are any visual inspections that I can do to see if the transmission is alright? Also, what kind of costs can be involved in repairing one?

Thanks in advance, Frank in MT

There was a 971 (I think) diesel SOS at the show in LaSuer for sale for $15-1700 cause of the SOS.The thing made it through the parade and manuvered around but missed some speeds. A fix it, can be real simple and cheap or go over $3000 depending on your luck I guess.
Bern is the guy to answer this one.

Frank,

I've never owned one with SOS, but from what I've read here and other places, unless it is dirt cheap, run away! SOS parts are expensive, and mechanics to work on them are rare.

I'd pass and look for a good 5 speed w/ 2 stage clutch and "live" PTO. More info at the link below:

An opinion and Good Luck!
