My father has a Ford 4000 with Select-o-Speed transmission. He is very careful about using the proper trans fluid and keeping it clean. Worked fine until yesterday when he was brush hoggin. Heading down a hill the transmission suddenly locked up. Had to jack it up use the towing option to get it home. Any ideas about the problem or how to fix it would be appreciated.

The select-o-speed tranny needs constant tlc and adjusting/servicing by experienced mechanics to keep from breaking down. Sounds like you are servicing appropriately but not performing appropriate PM adjustments. That tranny should only be worked on by experts. Maintaining it properly will be more expensive than a conventional tranny. Once you have the tranny fixed, be sure to keep it maintained and adjusted by people who know what they are doing.

This is a real can of worms, you know?

The following information may help narrow things down a bit (I have been told that the Select-O-Speed is murder to work on). I am not a mechanic, but I do have this sort of info lying around. Comes in handy sometimes.

Symptom: Locks up in 3, 4, 7, 10, and R2. Malfunction: The one-way clutch locked up.

Symptom: Operates in overdrive ratios only. Malfunction: Band 1 is not releasing.

Symptom: Locks up in 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, R1 and R2. Malfunction: Band 2 is not releasing.

Symptom: Locks up in 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Malfunction: Band 3 is not releasing.

Symptom: Locks up in P, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and goes to R1 in Neutral.
Malfunction: Clutch 1 is not releasing.

Symptom: Locks up in P, 1, 3, 5, 7, R1, R2 and goes to 2 in Neutral.
Malfunction: Clutch 2 is not releasing.

Symptom: Locks up in P, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, R1, R2, and goes to 1 in Neutral.
Malfunction: Clutch 3 is not releasing.

Hey, it's a start, anyway.
