My 1971 3000 diesel has lately started reving up the engine with out my assistance. Every few seconds the engine revs up like I had hit the accelerator then let off. For the last two years the fuel pump has had a slow dripping leak to it. The leak has now stopped on its own. I have also had to clean out the sediment bowl several times lately due to a quick accumulation of crud-mud in the glass. Could it be that where the fuel pump was leaking it is now sucking air and changing the air/fuel ratio mixture for just long enough to cause the short lived acceleration? Or could it be dirty injector(s)from the excessive fuel tank contamination? Can you think of any other possibilities?

Two questions. Is this the original engine, and what kind of injection pump does it have, rotary or inline?

If it's the original engine, this glass bowl thing sounds off to me. Where exactly is it? Not many 3000s were factory equipped with a glass sediment bowl, although the replacement engines do.

My hunch is you have the rotary pump on it and that due to a poor seal somewhere you are sucking air. This could be aggravated by a plugged screen in the tank, forcing the pump to have to really pull hard to get that fuel out of the tank, taking along air with it past a poor or loose joint.

Your symptoms of an occasional engine surge like that definitely sound like air ingress into the system.

The fuel pump is a CAV with fuel lines comming off in all sorts of different angles and directions.(don't have my manual here to tell you which type it is). I don't know if it is the original engine for sure although it doesn't appear to have been broken apart before and the paint seems to be original. The glass bowl is on the right side below the fuel tank with a line going to a single canister filter about 6 inches in front of the glass bowl. Is there any reason I shouldn't pull the fuel pump and check all connections and seals before reinstalling? I have read of some fuel pumps that are difficult to retime but I don't think mine is one of them. Sounds like it's time to pull the tank to clean and check the screen. Maybe a coating job on the tank inside as the board has posted several successes with the coating process lately.

Mike, sounds like this sediment bowl you have installed is aftermarket.

Good idea to check screen in tank before going any farther. I wouldn't pull pump just yet, even though it's not hard to do. Just make sure all your fittings going to the pump are tight. If they aren't, it will suck air for sure.

Flush out your fuel tank, disassemble & clean the water separator, change the fuel filter, and see how it runs. Be sure there is a steady flow of fuel going into the injection pump.You may cure it, or you may have more troubles. Start with basic, easy, inexpensive fixes.
