Sloppy shifter fix for TEA

I have owned several fergusons over the years, best damn tractors ever built, except for the fact the shifters tend to get sloppy. I was messing in the shop today and stumbled across something that might be of interest, Remove the shifter assembly from the trans [two bolts] disassemble the shifter[drive out retaining pin] replace weak or missing spring with a piece of 1 1/2 by 3/8 radiator hose. tightens everything up but still allows movement. Let me know how you make out.....

I have a '54 TEa 20, and mine left me with the plow in one ditch and the rear end in the road! Easy fix but nerve racking while you wait. My Father in Law worked on a road crew and he had a "Fergie" and brand new they did the same thing!
I will use the hose trick. Thanks
