I need to know the valve lash settings cold on a TO 30 gasoline engine.

My Ferguson shop manual advises .015 in. cold then run engine at fast idle for 20 minutes, then adjust to .013 in. while hot. In the old days at least for me early 60's DRAG CAR SOLID LIFT CAMSHAFTS WE WOULD JUST GO ABOUT 1 OR 2 THOUSANT'S TIGHTER WITH A COLD ENGINE AND THEN WITH HEAT EXPANISON THE ADJUSTMENT WOULD BE RIGHT ON. Also if anyone is interested my Ferguson shop manual is a reprint from orginal they can be purchased at Faxon Literature 1-800-458-2734

Pete, there is a descrepancy in either your or my owners manual. Mine says 0.013' cold, and nothing about a hot setting, though 0.015" will not be out enough for any harm. I bought my owners manual from the MF dealership nearby, it states "copyright 1951 by Harry Ferguson Inc"; back cover has "form no.z-3481-c" and 11/76-M.P.. I assume it's a Nov. 1976 reprint. Like I said, a loose setting will not harm anything but a tight setting will cause hard starting and possibly burn valves. These fine old machines are very forgiving or they would'nt still be running.

Setting is 0.013" cold for intake and exhaust. Loose settings will just rattle some with no damage. Tight settings will cause hard starting.
