Head gasket leak?

My second problem with this TO-30 is that the engine is running ragged. I've tried lots of obvious things: tearing down the carburetor (twice), double and triple check the distributor, points, wiring, etc. I've gotten nowhere but one factor in the problem seems suspicious. When we first got the tractor home, we used it for about an hour to grade a driveway. It ran perfectly. Then we changed its oil (which was somewhat dirty, but not a disaster). Then we changed its antifreeze -- of which there wasn't any! The thing had run about 170 degrees, but not obviously hot. So we put in a full load of antifreeze, congratulating ourselves on how much coolor the engine would run. But now it runs rough! Could this be a blown head gasket or (shudder) a cracked block? Any other ideas?

Could be both. Do a compression test on it at least it will tell you if the head gaskit is good or not, along with the rings and valves. If real low you will haft to check with some oil in it for the rings then pull the head to pinpoint the rest. Check the arcives under compression test. Mark H.
