I have been looking for a tractor to use for finish mowing. I'm new to tractors but in looking around the net and reading I decided that the 8N would do. Then someone I work with said he felt the Ferguson TO-20 would be better because it had more power. I have been trying to find info on engine HP, PTO (live or not), 3PT (yes or no), hydraulics etc to compare with the 8N. I know its a lot but if someone has the time to help I would appreciate it.

A TO 35 Ferguson or a Massey Ferguson TO or MF 35(same tractor) is worth consideration, as they were avalable with power steering, double clutch(live PTO) ground speed pto, gas and diesel engines(about 35 drawbar hp) had a 3 plow rating compared to the Fords 2 plow, a double range transmission(6 forward and 2 reverse)and they aren't really in demand by collectors. Another tractor that is similar is the MF 50, it is almost the same, but has a different front end.

Evan,
You seem to be "in the know" on Ferguson tractors, so if you don't mind I'd like to pick your brain a bit! What is ground speed PTO? Also, is the double range transmission controlled all on one shifter like the Oliver 550 or is it a separate Hi-Lo lever? Do you know what a MF 35 weighs? Thanks.

Evan didn't seem to answer you, so I thought, I'd step in...

Ground Speed PTO is a way that the PTO can be engaged to match the ground speed, not the engine speed. I have it on my MF TO-35 and have yet to find a use for it. It's MUCH slower than the standard PTO speed.

The TO-35 (and MF35/50/65/85) all have a two gear shift setup. The main is 1st-3rd and reverse and the auxilary is High-Start-Low. That's basically what you have on the Oliver, except that there's one gearshit with two different quadrants.

My TO-35 is about 4000 pounds - weight could vary depending on the amount of fliud in the tires and which engine you have (mine has the 4-cylinder Standard Motors diesel).

I found a very good use for the Ground driven PTO. When my Heston Round Baler pickup plugs up I put it in Ground Drive and back up. It spits the plug out and then I can ease into it and get it on through. The Ferguson three point mounted side delivery rake really works great on the ground driven PTO but it has to be geared a little differently than when you use the 540 PTO.

The TO-20 & 30 have Continental overhead valve engines which are more powerful than the Ford's flathead engines. The tractors are just about identical except for the engines, electrics, and sheet metal hood.

The TO-20 or 30 is just about the same as the 8N in most ways.You will have to go to a TO-35 Ferguson to get live PTO and not all have it.The Ford reverse is equal to third gear forward but the Fergusons all have much slower reverses.The Ford 8N and the Ferguson TO-20 and TO-30 all require the PTO to be engaged to lift the 3 point hitch.So to go from one area to another you have to get off the tractor and unhook the PTO shaft from the tractor,thenput the PTO back into gear to lift the mower to move to another area with the mower lifted but not running.
