Spreading Manure

I've been asked to help with a job that many feel is my true calling, spreading manure. I'll be speading manure using my TO-35 and a Ferguson "chain drive" type of spreader. Can anyone give me any tips that might be of help? I have little or no idea of how fast I should pull it, what gear to be in, or even if I should pull in low or high range. Any input (constructive of course) would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

A ground driven spreader is going to pull your tractor down, so I'd use low range and perhaps 3rd gear depending on terrian. Driving too fast will result in spreader damage. The transfer chain and cross bars that move the "pile" back into the shredder tines will break easily if adjusted to move to fast. The bottom line is: start out slow and get the feel of how the spreader is accepting your actions. You can always cover the ground a 2nd time if needed.

Thanks Ray, that's a help! I'm going to give it a go in a couple of hours, and I'll take your advice. I'll start her off slow and see what happens!

i have a to30 using a ground driven spreader and 2nd gear works good for me . good luck and have fun

A long time ago,early 1950,s I took our TO-30 and an MM ground driven spreader over to help a neighbor. Unloaded in 2nd gear and was the only one who did not get stuck that day. Loose sandy ground yet.
