Hey Everybody
I think I messed up my steering system. I was backing up the tractor in a wooded area and jammed the front right tire up against a tree and heard a popping sound from up front. When I got the tractor unstuck, the front wheels were way out of line. What is the procedure for getting them back in line or what damage could have happened? Thanks,

I have had this problem with my TO-30 in the past. What happens to mine is that the large slotted set screw adjuster on the side of the steering box backs out due to vibration. (One of these days I might actually loctite it so I don't gain any more "experience" with this problem. )
When the wheel gets an excessive amount of turning force applied to it the slop in the steering gear allows it to "skip" a tooth. This is how I fix mine:
Back off the steering box adjustment screw on the side that is out of alignment.
Hold the wheel in place with a bar so the steering linkage on that side can't move.
Turn the steering wheel in the direction that will make the other wheel come into alignment.
You will feel the steering wheel jump a little as the gear teeth skip past each other. Keep doing this until you get to the proper alignment.(i.e. if it skipped 3 teeth when it popped you have to go back three teeth. )It may make you a little nervous at first but it takes surprisingly little force with the adjustment screw backed out. When you have proper alignment of the wheels adjust the screw back in until the steering play goes away. The first time this happened I took the steering box off and examined the gears. I found no damage. Taking the steering box off is not difficult but I found it to be time consuming and uneccessary in the end. Good luck

You say the wheels are way out of line? Are you saying one toes in or out? Did you bend the axle, Radius arm, drag linkage bars, spindle arm? I hope you did not break a gear on the inside of the stering box. Look at the drag ling bars is there any new area showing like you pulled some of the treaded rod out or in? Are the spindle arms still straite on top of the wheel spindles? Need a little more inpho. I have a complete axle assembly if needed. Mark H.

Hopefully, you won't need them, but I have two matching steering sector gears that I believe to be in fine shape. The box they came out of is cracked, and I just replaced the whole box rather than swapping the gears. Since this forum isn't an advertising medium, after you assess the situation further, email me if you are interested and we can work something out.

Hey Mark
Thanks for answering so quickly. The spindles are straight and the axle appears to be straight. There does not appear to be any separation at the drag links so I guess it could be a bent spindle or the dreaded broken gear in the steering housing. I am on the road right now and can not get to the tractor to look, but my immediate thought was an internal failure when I heard the "pop". I looked in the manual real quick and read about the steering system. Is the steering housing difficult to break down and is the gear assembly available if it is broken?

The steering boxes are costly! I know where I can get on for 400.00!!! That's why I never bought it for a spare! Wait till you get back to look at the spindle, if the box is busted I would think you couldn't turn it very far or only one wheel would move. Mark H.
