I recently purchased a TO-30 which is not currently running. The tractor will go into all four gears, but not the Start gear. I am unfamiliar with this gear. Is there a problem with this gear or am I doing something wrong?

usually on old tractors or farily old ones. The start gear is neutral. If you have problems with that something is wrong witht eh trany.

The "S" spot is not realy a gear it is used to opperate the starter not allowing you to start it in gear. I pushes a set of contacts together to make the starter in/gauge. The linkage may be a problem. It goes under the switch that has the Neg battry cable hooked to and the other big cable goes to the starter. When you push it forward to the "S" it pushes up on the switch. Mark H.

I erred in my post, the last sentence should read: The starter switch mounting bolts are slotted for adjustment as needed.

Mark is right Garry. You can buy a new switch at Carquest or NAPA auto parts stores and naturally a MF dealer. The Start/reverse gear slot is designed to raise up on the shift lever to enter it, most are so worn you can't tell it though. The shift lever connects to a bar under the starter switch to activate it. The starter mounting bolts are slotted for adjustment as needed.
