Points?

The last few times I've used my tractor I've noticed a clicking sound coming from the distributer area, kinda sounds like a spark. I looked at it in the dark but couldn't see any spark anywhere. I've replaced the plug wires, plugs and distributer cap within the last few weeks and nothing appears to be loose anywhere.

Seems to make this clicking noise mostly after start-up and several times it seemed like the engine was going to quit. My next guess would be the points, Which are at least 4 years old that I know of. Any suggestions/cures?

Try putting a small dab of grease on the lobes in the dist (where the points arm contacts the shaft) Mine where a bit noisy when I got the tractor. As general practice I run in new points with the cam dry for a few hours work, then grease them. The points arm is then worn into the shaft, and will retain the points gap much longer.

I would change the points and also check the distributor shaft the bushings could be quite worn just grab the shaft and try to move it and lift on it you will notice if it is loose this throws off the spark because the rotor button moves with the shaft. You changed the cap was the old one carboned up inside of the cap? In any case a set of points is cheap and probably due for a change anyway. regards

Thanks for responding Rod. No, the old cap didn't seem to be carboned up any. I'm going to try and see if the shaft has any play in it in the morning. Thanks again for the help.
