T0-30 Hydrolics

Hi all,
My To-30 hydrolics seem to be working ok for most of anything I do. A couple problems that I do have is: 1. It wont hold any implements up in the air when the engine is off. It slowly creeps back down.

2. It occasionally will fall from the top most position to the ground. (again engine is off)I found this quite dangerous when I had an auger atachment on it. Darn near skewered my son!

Any simular experiences and what it might take to repair?

They all drift down eventually. However the drift rate is a whole bunch quicker if the seal around the lift piston is worn. And the heavier the implement, the quicker the drift. There are videos out that show how to redo Ferguson hydraulics, as well as various shop manuals.

I've seen and lived with the problem on Ford Fergusons and Massey Ferguson's. You can learn to live with it if you know it's going to happen. If you want to reduce the problem then replacing the piston seal and honing the cylinder bore is probably the place to start, since this is happening when the engine is off.

From experince with my tractor and from reading the posts on this web site, your lift should not just suddenly fall to the ground. If you have an implement raised off the ground and you turn the engine off and do not move the touch control, it is normal for the lift to slowly fall. The time and rate of fall depends on the condition of your hydraulic system. But, it should not just suddenly fall. My guess is an internal leak or the control valve. Also, a common problem is the buildup of water in the system from condensation. You will be amazed at how much water can accumulate if the trans-hydraulic oil has not been changed in a while. The oil used for this is 134D available from Ford-New Holland (or what ever they are called now). It is a thin oil and I have read where some with worn hydaulic systems have had problems with their lifts not working. Instead they put in 90 Wt. oil and they worked with it. Obviously, they are just masking a problem that will get worse in time as the system wears more.

Hi Don,
that is not a problem of a Ferguson-Hydraulic, that is normal.
Each Ferguson-hydraulic does not hold any implements in the air if engine is off.
So the only thing you can do to have no trouble is to put the implements down on the ground when engine is off.
