Ring gear on flywheel

hi. i have a 52' to-30,everything was working fine, until i went to restart,and starter pinion would not engage fly wheel ring gear.itook the starter offand about 1/8" of the teeth are worn. it looks like the ring gear is too deep for the starterpinion to engage.can the ring gear move on the flywheel?has this happened to anybody else?starter is working ok. bendix is ok too.also i cannot turn engine over easily. ring gear hitting housing? clutch bad?

Check the crankshaft end float.

JD: I have an early TO-20 and at some point the ring gear was welded to the flywheel--the position of the ring gear is such that the ring gear has been mashed by the starter and the ring gear teeth are also worn. In my experience the ring gear needs to be heated (cherry red) to remove it or install it. I would start with the starter as the culprit. As far as turing the engine over, make sure the clutch is disengaged and if necessary remove the plugs to make it easier. Also you can get a good view of the flywheel and ring gear if you remove the vertical plate that is bolted to the transmission housing below the engine block and to the rear of the oil pan. Early TO20 had a problem with the starter knocking the ring gear into the bell housing and locking the engine. Later TO 20 and TO 30 should have the ring gear pressed on from the opposite side if the flywheel therefor it would be impossible for the ring gear to move towards the bell housing unless you have a very eary TO 20 flywheel on your tractor.

Some flywheels ring gears are pressed on you might have broke it loose. I might be wrong but the TO-30 has a sholder and I belive the TO-20 dosen't, they both fit but different part numbers. Wheres Ray when you need him. Mark H.

TRACTORS TYPE TE-20 TO FIT START GEAR
1 clean out spigot of flywheel
2lay gear on flat surface and heat uniformly to 560-570 degress F.
3 drop gear on flywheel flange and slowly rotate whilecooling until held ferm by contaction. interference fit .024"-.015".(.6138-mm)

STARTER GEAR RING SHOULD BE REPLACED COLD AS INSTRUCTED BELOW,IN ORDER TO ENSURE LONG LIFE AND MAINTIANTHE HARDNESS OF THE RING . IMMERSION OF THE RING IN BIOLING WATER WILL ASSIST THIS OPERATION BUT GREATER HEAT MUST NOT BE APPLIED .PLACETHE FLYWHEEL ON A SOLID BASE AND OFFER THERING GEAR,SQUARELY ON TO THE SPIGOT. FIT FOUR (G) CLAMPS SPACED EQUALLY AROUND THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE RING AS SHOWN IN PRINCIPLE IN FIG.14. TAP GEAR RING LIGHTLY ON TO THE FLYWHEEL SPIGOT BY MEANS OF A SOFT METAL DRIFT, KEEPING IT SQUARE AND FOLLOWING ITS PROGRESS' ON TO THE SPIGOT BY TIGHTENING THE (G)CLAMPS. HAVING SFFECTIVELY STARTED THE RING ON THE SPIGOT,DISPENSE WITH THE CLAMPS AND DRIVE GEAR FULLY HOME AGAINST ITS FLANGE. HOPE THIS HELPS BRUCE
