TO-30 crankshaft thrust bearing

I have a 1951 TO-30 and am in the process of overhauling the engine. When I dropped the oil pan I discovered that there was way too much end play on the crankshaft. The manual states that there is supposed to be two thrust bearings, but I only had the bronze front bearing. The fiber bearing that goes behind the front main bearing was missing. There were what looked like pieces of a gasket in the bottom of the oil pan. Could this have been the remains of the fiber thrust bearing? Does this come with the main bearings?

The Cont. Z120 and Z129 engines in the TO 20 and 30 had 2 styles of front main bearing that are interchangeable. I think you have the earlier style with 2 thrust washers , The later style has a thrust washer and the shell bearing has a flange on one side.

Actually, the Z-120 had the flanged bearing shell on the front main, but the Z-129 did not. Both fit in the Z-129, though. The block on my TO-30 engine had the flanged bearings in it, but if you read the manual (confirmed by my local Ferguson expert) it clearly states that the Z-129 did not use the flanged bearing, but used separate thrust washers. My rebuilt Z-129 from Central Tractor had the non-flanged bearings, as it should. It WAS missing the woodruff key on the cam gear, however. A word of warning - always check the crank gear/pulley and cam gear to make sure the keys are there. All can look swell, but if the cam turns in the gear, the engine won't run! And the key on the cam gear is really small. I can understand that it probably fell out unnoticed when the gear was placed on the cam. I was still a bit ticked, though.
