Put new battery in the 30 as positive ground. when I connected the cables giant spark. scary! when I took off the wire to inside pole of generator, it reduced it to nothing or just an bitty spark. It drains the battery if left hooked up. I also tried taking off starter cable, but still giant spark. Does it matter which pole the cable goes down to - think it is called the starter switch? Hope you can understand the question. maybe it is the regulator not working. Kind of like to know how to trace the problem step by step. the tractor does start and run,so that is good. thanks!!!

I suspect your voltage regulator relay is stuck. Remove the cover and inspect the contacts for burning or welded together.
