I'm working on a TO-35. I've rebuilt the engine, totally.

New sleeves, pistons, rod & main bearings (that crank mics 0.020" and that's what I used), new governor assembly, valve job, you name I did it.

But, the crazy thing still knocks like mad!! It does it at fast rpms under no load. Could it be the timimg gears?? I notice there seems to be an excessive amount of backlash in the oil pump drive gear but I can't think that all this noise is coming from that little bit of slop. Anyone else had this noise??....please help.

I've worked on thetractor all week. Checking endplay, plastiguaging bearings, measuring crankshaft journals, etc.

Finally I found the timinng gears were severely worn in one spot. The teeth were worn to a point and causing a loud click. at high speeds this click sounded like a knock especially echoing in the cast oil pan and whit metal timing cover. I replaced the gears and she's quiet as a church mouse.

No, the tractor was extremely tired and need the other work anyhow. I just hope this can help someone else avoid this problem.

Hi F.M.

From my experience if knocks with no load
and do not knock on load it is usually connecting
rod clearance too loose on crankshaft. Did you measure the crankshaft in order to have right connecting rod bearing size ?

If knocks under all conditions a screw or gasket piece or other &?% may falled in a cylinder accidentally when you reinstalled the head.

I'd suspect the crankshaft or camshaft end play.

the t0-30 did. I'm guessing the 35 did too as they are very similar. There has to be some way to take up endplay, even if it's the rear main bearing edge that hits the crank flange. I just suggest that it might be a probable cause of the noise.

We had a to-30 that broke the thrust washer, found it in the oil pan. Ran it for a long time, but it was already loose and had poor or no oil pressure to begin with. It did have a very light rod knock at idle with no oil pressure. I do remember the crank would shift 1/8" when the clutch was depressed. I guess the end play was not very critical on a to 30, or oil pressure either.
