I have a TO-30. Is it normal for the hydrolics to slowly lower what it's holding up over say 10 minutes. Tractor is off. For example, if the bush hog is 18 inches off the ground and held up, and the tractor is shut off; in 10 minutes it has lowered itself all the way down.Is this normal?

Mike its not normal. I have a TO-30 also and mine does the same thing. It is due to old age and wear. I was reading my shop manual about it and if I remember right it said to open the inspection port with the hyd dip stick on it. With a load on the PTO raised, look inside and you should see fluid leaking by either from the cylinder or tube. Ill have to make a copy of that section and Ill E-mail you a copy as an attachment. Then you can find out whats leaking by and fix it. I have to do that also. From what I read you can fix the hydraulics from the rear with out too much trouble by just taking off the top cover to get to the pump and all.

You need to find your self a shop manual for sure. And a good compainion is the parts manual which give the exploaded veiws of everything. Between the two you can see how everything goes together and know exactly what parts you need and the exact numbers and names for them. Makes ordering parts so simple.I just ordered some from my local dealer and its so easy, I just fax him an order with my parts numbers, he orders them, tells me the total, I mail him a check and he mails me the parts. I dont have to spend time waiting on the phone trying to figure out what the parts numbers are or what they are called or anything. And I know I got the right ones.Anyway Im at work now so when I get home Ill E-mail you that section on the hydraulics. Should be an easy fix.

Removing the top cover is a little tricky. Follow the manual carefully. You have to go thru the side covers and disconnect the linkage first. Hooking it back is also tricky if you haven't done it. If you can repair it without removing the top cover, do so. 10 min leakdown when shut off is a little quicker than I'd normally want, but not terrible, and I'd have to be pretty well caught up on stuff before I'd dive into fixing that. My 2 cents.

If it was perfect the implement wouldn't drop, but when approaching 50 years old, things start to wear out (tractors as well as people!). In other words, for a tractor this old, it is a normal thing to happen. Hydraulic fluid is leaking somewhere in your system; a common problem is at the piston rings. I had to fix mine because the implement would drop in ten seconds. It was a bunch of work so you may want to just live with it. If it drives you nuts or you feel like it really deserves to be fixed, check back over the last few months of these messages and I think you'll find quite a bit of information.

Hello; I have been told my system is rare for a 1953 TO-30, if I leave my blade up I can come out the next day and it still is up! I am not sure how long it would take to go down. It works great when using it if I set it up 1 inch while working it stays there and with out the Zang Thing. But I bet if I worked on it. it would'nt stay up so long and I'm leaving it the way it is. Mark, my '53 TO30 is the same way, stays right up, no drop. Know what you mean about leaving well enought alone, sometimes we have good intentions but...
