PTO clutch add on?

Hey guys I been scrolling through web pages looking at tractors and I have a question for you all. I forget where I read it but some where they were talking about the PTO on our ferggies. Our PTO is not a live PTO, it stops when tractor stops when you push in the clutch.It said something about it being unsafe cause the inertia of the implement could keep the tractor going forward. So it recommeded some sort of add on PTO clutch deal. I forget exactly what it was called.Any one know what it is called and have one installed?

Sure Tim,
It's called and Over Running Coupler (commonly referred to as an ORC.) When you push the clutch in and stop the PTO from turning, the inertia is already happening with the implement; most prevalent with a mower. What happens next is the inertia begins to turn the pto, tranny, etc and YOU CAN"T STOP IT WITH THE BRAKES!! This is definately an E ticket ride when you're pointing towards a tree, fence, car, whatever.
The ORC is a ratcheting device that hooks on to the PTO and then to the implement. It allows itself to freewheel when you push in the clutch, allowing the PTO to stop and therefore you are able to stop. Good investment of 60 bucks. Be sure to get one that fits your PTO; probably 1 1/8" and has an output of 1 3/8". This way it becomes it's own adapter and you can eliminate your other one. If you are in Canada you can get them for $79 Cdn. at Princess Auto. They have the 1 1/8" -> 1 3/8" version; as Chuck says, very handy.

This is a exceptional forum with so many "experts".

Regarding the ORC from Princess Auto - is it of high quality? I've seen a few other comments on this board about sloppiness and play with some ORCs and a couple of comments about the varied quality of some of the units on the market.

I have a 51 Fergie that I would like to use a rotary mower on but want to be sure I get a good ORC on it first.

Any suggestions what to look for as, to the inexperieinced, all of those metal things look pretty substantial until they start to twist, bend and distort.
