What is a Ferguson 30?

Hello,

I am going to an auction this weekend to look at what the auctioneer describes as a 1950's "Ferguson 30"? Can someone tell me what this tractor is? I'm guessing it's a T030? 4-cylinder, three-point hitch? PTO? What is the HP rating?

Any known pros/cons to such a tractor? I'm looking to brushog up to 60 acres about every other year, and do some light box blade work. A front end loader is highly desired but not necessary.

Thanks for any information! This site and its discussion groups look like a great resource.

My recommendation is to take along someone who knows these tractors to look at it. I was at an auction where a TO-30 was advertised. I looked at it. It was a TO-20. The left brake pedal has broken off, so the former owner has welded it to the right one. So the only single brake you could operate was the right one. I saw lots of non-stock modification, mostly because of cheapness. A young guy was there looking at it, and had no clue about the true condition of this tractor, or even what kind it was! Fortunately some of us older and wiser (?) men scared him off. Someone ended up paying $2100 for it, though, and they couldn't even get it started...

Looks like you've gotten some pretty accurate info so far, the only con with such a tractor is that it becomes your baby, you enjoy it so much you begin to daydream about it when you're apart, you begin to buy implements for it you don't really need (well, you think you do), you even go to extremes to hint to your wife that you may need a second one for Christmas...oops, sorry dear

The dang things follow you home, like puppy dogs. Of course you need one to show, one to work, one to putter with, etc., etc.... And then you get so it's too much trouble to unhook the plow and hook up the disk, so you have one you keep the plow on and another with the disk or blade, or whatever. Then you realize how stupid that is or you run out of space or $$, and you sell something ..., and start over. It's great.

HP for the TO30 with Z129 engine should be around 28, if I recall. It will handle all the items you mentioned. Front loaders are much easier to use on tractors with power steering, however. These tractors have ohv engines and will outpull the 8Ns. They do not have live hydraulics. The PTO must be engaged for the hydraulics to work. For bush hogging you will want an override clutch on the PTO, about $65. Parts are easy to come by and they are easy to work on. Make sure it doesn't have water in oil or vice versa. Make sure steering box isn't leaking or cracked as those are hard to find.

Hi first a couple of things, look for a serial number plate right above the steering wheel. If the number plate is there, look for the number at the top. According to the the people in the know serial numbers after 60000 these are TO30s. Look below the distributor for an engine no. If it says Z129 its a TO30. If it says Z120 its a TO20.
