Trying to figure out the proper transmission oil for a TO 35. The people at the Massey parts department claim the parts book calls for 80/90 wt. The shop foreman at Massey says to use hydraulic transmission oil, ex: hi-lo oil. I don't have an owners manual to see what it specifies, so I don't know which to use. As I am in a cooler climate, maybe a lighter oil would be better. But, I don't know if hyd./transmission oil works with a hypoid rearend gear, if they are indeed hypoid in it.

Hi Neighbour -

The original manual called for 80 or 90 straight mineral gear oil. We've been using Co-op Trans hydraulic for over 20 years with no problems. Like you, I feel better with some extra lubrication performance for the ring gear and pinion. Lost one once with straight gear oil; haven't since using the trans-hydraulic.

I too have had no problems with the Hy-Tran, I have Ultramar Lotak 80w-90 in mine, made my transmission shut up, it used to be a real grind box, now it only will grind sometimes when I'm putting it in 3 High. Evan MacDonald
