thanks for the help on battery. I meant to say my battery will take a charge but does not charge while running. Currently it is 6 volt but still run it from negative ground. It does run. If I start to put battery in right as postive, will I really mess it up? Plan on getting 6 volt cables as a start. thanks so much for the help.we use it because it has a loader on it.

I don't think you will mess it up if you swap it to positive ground like it should be. My opinion. I would try it.

I agree with Phil, if your charging system isn't working you have not damaged the battery, because the starter doesn't matter what polarity it runs on. When you get the charging system working use pos ground to frame/engine connection. A tip to ensure good connection; buy a long pos cable and run it directly to a starter mounting bolt. Sometimes the years of rust, dirt, etc will cause high resistance through the dash metal components. It's rare but also possible to charge a battery backwards and reverse its polarity, ie: the pos post becomes the neg side. This only happens when charging a completely run down battery.
