Oil filter leak -- T0-20

The poorly designed oil pan/filter has given me occasional leakage problems over the last 25 years that I've owned this tractor, but nothing I couldn't live with.

The other day I changed the oil and filter, and put a new seal on the cover plate. It leaks like crazy now; in 24 hours it probably lost 2 quarts. The plate or pan are not bent or dinged.

Is there any better method of sealing this problem area besides the stock gasket? It seems like someone would have invented an external filter system or something...?

The man I bought my TO-20 from said that it leaked after he changed the oil. He took a sheet of cork and cut it into a circle where it stuck out just a little. It has a little hole in the center so the plate can bolt up to the pan. It hasn't leaked for me.

this may sound stupid!! I purchased what i believed to be a to-20 a couple of weeks ago. local library had a shop manual for it, looked for oil filter and other maintainece items and made notes. went to change the oil and the pan has been welded all around where the filter is soposed to be!!!!! Is thes a to-20 or was there a model that has a different set up?

I'm only guessing, but I would suspect someone had a leak they couldn't stop and welded the damned thing up.

To see exactly what tractor you have, go to the "Research & Info" menu to the left, click "Serial Numbers" and look your numbers up under the Ferguson heading.

Had the same thing happen to me this spring. New gasket and leaks worse than before by far. After runnig the engine and monkeying with the gasket it finally quit. This topic has been discussed before as to external oil filter. Don't think there was an easy fix.

Thanks for the replies. I'm surprised that no one has come up with a simple solution.

mine would leak to but it was because the pan was beat up but i also ground the heavey plate wher the bolt goes through so the plate will fit up tighter to the pan grind on the in side just a little it worked for me
